Despite all its many attributes and a handsome restyle by chief designer Harm Lagaay, the 968 was produced for just four years, until a rationalisation of production resources ended its reign in 1995.

Although the 968 owes much of its heritage to the 944, while still retaining some of the classic Porsche design characteristics, such as the rounded headlights and raked bonnet, it was designed as a new Porsche in its own right. From its Tiptronic transmission to an engine, which provided more torque than any normal 3.0 litre in series production at the time, the 968 did indeed, as Ferdinand Alexander Porsche said, "represent a new chapter in the history of the sportscar."
